Welcome to Jenny Chat

  • FASHION / Weekly fashion faves, 5

Another week down, another closer to the festive period… Eek! Are you excited? Are you ready?

For me, the answers are yes and no – I’m already feeling pretty festive (if you’ve seen my Insta stories this week you’ll know that I’ve started wearing my festive PJs, drinking mulled wine and even met Santa! ) however I’ve done zero gift shopping so it feels like that may be stressful this year. But, I’ve started writing and planning #blogmas posts, so small wins!

This week’s fashion faves are very blogger-centric; they do say that no-one is more influenced than an influencer font they… Not that I’m anywhere near the league of these sassy babes, but ya get where I’m coming from.

    Billie Faiers

Dress, Billie x In the Style

I think I like this look so much for 2 reasons – 1, I’m all about that Monochrome life and 2, I’m pining for the days that I could wear jumper dresses and feel like they looked nice on me. To be honest, thus would totally work over skinny jeans though, so I’m tempted.

    Em Sheldon

    (image: @emshelx ) Cardigan, Missguided

I have a River Island version of this cardigan that I usually wear in a very slouchy and un-put together way, so it’s fab to see how I could dress it up and make it cute (and with leopard print, yass).

    Amy Spencer

    (image: @little_magpie1 )

Unless there were a few subtle snow flakes floating around Amy in this shot, it couldn’t scream British festive-ness more. I adore the navy tartan and pop of red and, as always, I’m pashing on Amy’s beachy waves that I can never quite do myself at home.

    Helen Anderson

(image: @helenanderz) – jeans, Topshop (similar here) / top, ASOS (similar here) / shoes, Office

This LOTD appeals because its a kind of ‘every gal’ look – stuff most of us probably have knocking about in our wardrobes that can be chucked on without much thought, and it looks great. She’s such a cool girl, she and Lily Melrose are the answers to the question “what makes Jenny want to spend all of her money on new clothes?”

Onwards in to another week – be brilliant and enjoy.

    Thanks for reading,

  • FOOD / Teas the season…hot drinks haul (November 2018)

OK; the title of this one might seem a bit odd to some…a hot drinks haul? But think about it:

    – The weather is cold, warm drinks are essential.

    – We do fashion hauls, beauty hauls, homeware hauls, so why not hot drinks?

    – I just really like buying tea, OK.

You may remember that last year I was thrilled to receive a tea advent calendar from the Mr (you can read my first impressions post here) from Bird and Blend (their 2018 advent calendar is here if you want to have a look) and a lot of the products in this haul are featured below (not spon, I wish! I just really like the brand)

    Honey Bee Beautiful loose leaf

This is now my favourite non ‘normal’ tea – it tastes nice, makes me feel lovely and relaxed (great for this time of year, though I drink this blend all year round. It’s a great natural combattent for hayfever) and it’s soooo frickin pretty. I’ve previously bought it in tea bag form but it looks like this has been discontinued, which makes me glad that I also got a Brewdini in last year’s Christmas stocking.

    The Digester tea bags

I’ve never tried this before, but I have a ridiculously slow metabolism and sometimes have an upset tummy for no reason so thought it would be worth a go to see if it would help.

    Dozy Girl loose leaf

I’m a long time fan of night time tea to help support an effective bed time routine (adults need a routine too, particularly if you don’t sleep too well like me) but thought I’d make a switch from my regular brand (Pukka) since I was putting an order in plus, it’s really pretty! Lavender and chamomile are definite chill out triggers (I use a moisturiser and pillow spray in these scents) so it’s a great way to re-inforce this in my body.

    Fairytale of NY loose leaf

For the last couple of years I’ve placed an order for the Snowball blend which comes out each festive season, but I spotted this blend had launched and changed my mind, literally for no other reason than this is the title of my all time favourite Christmas song.

It smells of coffee and Irish cream and is perfect for embracing festive-ness!

    Nescafé Coconut latte sachets

These smell utterly amazing; coconut is more of a scent for the summer I guess but I’m going with it! They also taste really creamy, I just popped in my normal 1 sweetener and it was good to go.

Nescafé Azera flat white coffee sachets

I have to say; coffee sachets have a reputation for being a bit cheap and sucky, but the game has really been raised with these two. Over the past year I’ve become a massive fan of the Azera range and this honestly tastes as good as any other flat white I’ve had.

If there are other unusual blends of tea or fancy coffee you’ve tried and liked feel free to link me to it in the comments section, there still may be a little bit of room in my kitchen cupboards to add a few more in!

    Thanks for adding,

    J xx

one of the things I enjoy most about fashion, is that you can put on anything and instantly become (or at least feel like you’ve become) a new person. Clothes allow you to embrace all areas of your personality – sassy, rock ‘n roll, tailored…the list goes on, and I get a lot of my inspo but how to channel these different parts of myself through looking at my how others have put looks together online.

Here are some of my faves from the last week:

    Nicole Sage (aka Sleek Chic)

Miss Sleek Chic also has a beautiful Insta-worthy home as well as cute outfits! This is the perfect way to leopard print in a classy way – it’s still statement, but the camel jacket tones in with it very nicely. VERY jealous of the Gucci soho disco bag as I still haven’t managed to get my hands on one (if I stopped frivolous spending on fast fashion, I’d have been able to buy at least 3 this year I reckon).

    Lily Melrose

    (Image: @llymlrs) Jumper, Topshop.

Spice up yo’ life Lily! Very in keeping with this week’s Spice Girls tour announcement (little aside: when I was about 14 I died my hair red for the first time because I loved the streaks Geri had). I would love to get this jumper whilst is still in stock, but I’m not sure if it would be very me or very age appropriate? I’m not sure if I subscribe to the whole ‘dress your age’ yet, but this one has given me pause for thought.

    Brooke Vincent

(Image: @brookelevivicent ) Jumpsuit, similar here.

I’ve been watching this gal a lot more this year, she’s definitely one who has a lot of fun with looks and is happy to try all sorts of outfits which I admire hugely. I’m very into the ‘strappy jumpsuits with long sleeved top underneath, cos it’s winter and I still wanna wear it’ and am doing it both in and out of the office lots RN.

    Lucy Wood

(Image: @lucyjanewood )T-shirt, Lucy Wood merch / Jeans, ASOS

Lucy Wood, the self style ‘average girl’ who I’ve only just discovered on YouTube. Well, lemme tell you – if this is average, I’d be more than happy to embrace it! I have all the composit parts of this look (mom jeans, biker, converse) but never quite look as awesome as this. I suspect it may firstly be down to the needing better fitting items, secondly needing a good old shut of confidence and a IDGAF attitude. What do you think?

FASHION, FOOD & FUN/ Gok Wan: One size fits all

I’m a long time Gok Wan fan – over the years I’ve watched How to Look Good Naked, Gok’s Fashion Fix, Fearne and Gok: off the Rails and as many This Morning fashion segments as I can catch when I’m not working.

Thanks to my awesome friend Lynsey’s (you’ll see more of her in a bit) suggestion, we recently headed to Sheffield to catch the man himsf live and in person as part of his ‘One Size Fits All’ brunch club when it made its way to Yorkshire last week.

This is the promo graphic used on the website, which I’m going to use as an honest review of the day. My overview was that it was a lovely supportive thing to attend, but a few opportunities were missed that could’ve really made it more on point.

But first, let’s talk outfits. You can’t head to a girly brunch without planning a cute look, right?

In my head I wanted to go for something that was quite easy and comfortable but that I still felt cool in. Leopard print and Faux leather seemed like it fit the bill (you’ll see the end OOTD a little further down with links).

Lynsey and I were so keen to start the day that we arrived in Sheffield City centre about an hour before we needed to, so had chance for a little wander around the sites and to snap a couple of pics.

    It’s such a lovely place!

Sheffield was recently named the second best night out in the UK (the first was Manchester, us Northerners know how it’s done I guess) which from the hazy memories I have of time spent there in my twenties I can heartily attest to.

The event happened at Mercure Sheffield St Paul’s Spa which is a lovely venue right next to the Peace Gardens (the hotel was to the right of the below shot, there were too many people for an external shot to look nice)

    Let me introduce Lynsey!

We’ve been friends for about 6yrs after meeting through work. She’s one of the loveliest and realest people I know, a great person to have a girls day with.

Team Gok brought along a lovely floral wall to have photos against, great start to any girly modern day girl event. I’ve posted the pics so you can see our outfits and the opening of the event, but I will say that I cannot stand how I look in them. I’m feeling crap about myself right now and, even though I felt good about how I looked when I left home that morning, I was so upset when I saw the harsh realities away from my home mirror.

Dress, Joanie / Jacket, ASOS / Bag, Michael Kors / Boots, Public Desire

I suppose though, if you’re gonna stand a chance of getting confidence from anywhere, it’s like to be from aunt Gok! I did get lots of lovely comments from other guests who liked my look, which was very kind of them.

After a glass of fizz to welcome us we headed to our table. I was VERY impressed by the styling, it reminded me of my wedding breakfast back in 2010 which may seem a bit OTT but it was perfect

Our table was was just 1 row back from the front so we had a great view when the man himself popped up to say hello and introduce himself.

although I didn’t get to personally speak to him he was everything I hoped he would be ; he also has a similar sense of humour to me which totally made me think we could be friends IRL. I will patiently await his call inviting me for a day of shopping and cocktails.

After a brief overview of the afternoon’s events it was time for food. Yay.

The website promised we would be served a 2 course, 5 star brunch. It was indeed 2 course (though I couldn’t eat the first course as I forgot to tell the venue I had an allergy to shellfish) but I’d liken it more to good quality hotel mass-catering event food (the kind we’ve all had at Christmas party nights etc) than 5 star.

Also, the food served couldn’t be classified as brunch in any way really – no breakfast food items, no brunch-related drinks (mimosa, bloody Mary, juices). This was what was served.

As I said the food was perfectly nice and tasty, but to offer it up as a top class brunch was misleading.

After food came the first catwalk show. Sadly there are no photos of these sections as everything was a bit too fast and came out blurry, which I didn’t want to I use as it doesnt show off the clothes very well.

I did however include a snap of this lil’ gal (Dolly, Gok’s Frenchie) who was happily wandering between tables being nosey and enjoying lots of attention.

The Gok team worked with a bunch of local boutiques and brands to help deliver this event. I really liked this idea as it shows what can be achieved using items in the area, however I couldn’t help but feel a teeny bit let down by the delivery of the concept.

I had presumed that all of the local brands would be featured in ‘Gok’ s Dream Space’ as a kind of shopping hub. The reality was that this was a pretty small space at the back of the main room and just 4 companies had a “stall” selling items (one of them wasn’t even a fashion brand, they sold candles, which I must say did smell lovely) the other brands were featured within the catwalk shows.

The brands submitted and styled all of the outfits themselves, which was kind of disappointing. Let me explain this a little more before anyone comes for me.

Most people in the room had paid £££ to listen to styling advice and tip delivered by Gok Wan, a Stylist. If they wanted the opinion of the boutiques/brands directly they could’ve easily gone along to their stores and gotten this free of charge. If they were being put on the catwalk I would’ve liked Gok or his team to be more involved in the styling side and it kind of be positioned “there are these amazing brands in your area, this is how I would recommend you wear them” as I’ve seen him do on TV.

Also, and again I’m not slating the quality of any brands that took part, but I really wish that the organisers would have been more selective with the local brands they used. I do understand that these companies will paid money to participate which will have covered some of the costs overall, but there just didn’t seem to have been a lot of thought going into who was chosen. As well as the candle brand there was also a bridal store and head wear company; both had beautiful items but were too specific for this kind of event. There was 1 lady in attendance that made herself known as wanting help with finding a wedding dress, but if you wanted this kind of inspiration you’d usually go to an event such as a wedding fair that was more tailored to suit.

Anyway, that’s my piece said on some of the bits I liked less.

I liked the trend analysis section that pulled out some of the more classic trends and gave a brief commentary and tips on how they can work well for you. He also spoke about the plus points of investing heavily in “classic trend” pieces to not only provide longetivity over years/seasons but also as a way of ensuring that fashion is sustainable, which as we all know is a hot button issue right now.

One of my fave parts of the event was the Q&A session (though they didn’t answer mine and Lynsey’s as there were too many. Sob.) as this showed off the Gok Wan we were all there for – very specific advice, a bit of cheeky banter) and a whole lot of complements/confidence out to his audience.

Pretty much every topic was covered – dressing for age, shape, size, in spite of access requirements (such as a wheelchair) and I managed to take a few notes like a diligent student for future use.

My other favourite part of the day were the makeovers.

At the start of the day people could nominate those they were with to receive a full transformation by the team, and the lovely Anne-Marie who was sat next to me was picked! She’s about the turn 50, her body is going through lots of changes (though she still looked bloody amazing) and she was just feeling a bit lost.

It was so lovely to see her transformed and he so happy with her new hair, makeup and outfit.

There were also some mini hair makeovers, which was to demonstrate Gok’s statement “you don’t have just one pair of shoes for everything, so why the hell would you only have one hairstyle?”. We must have been really good luck for our table, as this time the lady sat next to Lynsey was picked for one of these!

Dianne was ‘closer to 70 than 60’ in her words and has long hair she often wears in a chignon as her cousin has to her older ladies shouldn’t really have long hair.

The hair team took it all down and put a lovely wave through it and it looked lovely, older or not. (side note: one of Diane’s friends made her rum truffles as an early Christmas gift and she gave us one to try, they were amazing.)

I appreciate I’ve sounded a bit moany about a few parts of the day, but overall it was a nice way to spend an afternoon, be reminded of some things about style/confidence and generally have a good ol’ people watch to get inspiration from what other attendees were wearing.

    Happy Sunday you lovely lot!

I hope you’re all having a lovely day to round off your weekend – I’m having a chilled out PJ day with the Mr after a busy Saturday with Mr Gok Wan, more on that next week.

For now her are my favourite outfits of the week – leopard, Striped and black fabulousness awaits…

    Claudia Winkleman

Top, Gucci /Jeans, similar here / Stiletto court shoes, similar here

Claudia’s style isn’t always for me, but I really admire that she stays true to her aesthetic every single time, particularly when it comes to frocking up for Strictly every week.

I like this look because it’s ‘edgy gal does the red carpet on her own terms’ kind of vibe, if I was a few sizes smaller I’d definitely wear something like this but I’m not sure how comfortable I’d feel with a top that hadess structure to it.

    Chloe Lewis

Top, Missy Empire (similar here) / Trousers, similar here / Boots, similar here

I really like a lot of Chloe’s outfits, again she stays very true to what she likes when it would be so easy for her to wear exactly the same kind of stuff that a lot of the other TOWIE girls wear (they look lovely, BTW).

I lost my s**t over this look when I saw it – at the moment I’m extra-obsessed with leopard print and this is so simple but so frickin cool and awesome at the same time. *Maybe I could pull it off?

    Stacey Dooley

Since she started appearing on Saturday night prime time I believe everybody now adores Stacey, however I have an itty bitty confession: myself and the Mr (yes, he gets thrown under the bus on this one with me) have found her just a teeny bit annoying in the past, and haven’t been too impressed with her documentaries. I will say I haven’t seen the latest one about sustainable fashion so I don’t know if her style has changed or if that’s we simply don’t get on with her style of doing things.

Opinions aside, the gal seems to be pleasing everyone in the dance floor and I’m quite enjoying the outfits she’s sporting in her downtime. And her hair actually, this coppery colours looks gorge! My favourite thing about this outfit are the use of different textures, really elevate the most simple looks. If she’d have worn skinny jeans, it wouldn’t have been anything special.

    Gemma Collins

    Suit, Boohoo

Lets take a minute to applaud GC. Whatever you may think of her, this week a video was released hurling vile insults at her about her appearance, and she claps back by heading out publicly in a bold outfit that nobody can miss her in. The fact that it’s a suit shows she means business and for doing that she’s a bit of a hero to me, I probably would’ve taken the easy option and retreated. She looks great.

    Danielle Armstrong

Biker jacket, similar here / Cami, similar here / Pencil skirt, similar here / Sock boots, similar here / Belt, Gucci

All black, all sass, yasssss Danni! Again it’s a super simple look when you drill down to each piece, but the textures and construction of each item make it feel really cool. I would wear everything she has on, exactly how she’s wearing it.
