LIFESTYLE/ Hayfever hacks

This may seem like a bit of an odd (or maybe even boring) post to some of you, however to others it may just make the next few months a whole lot easier!
It wasn’t until last year that I discovered just how debilitating hayfever can really be. I have suffered with it on and off since my early 20s – it usually lasts for a few weeks max and drugstore medication has eased it considerably. However last year was horrendous. I had severe symptoms daily for about 4 months, no kind of medication touched it and I felt extremely poorly and miserable for days on end.
But not this year. I’m not prepared to have a repeat and have prepared well! My symptoms have already started but I’ve been doing a lot of research into alternative remedies to help kick the side effects into touch so wanted to share what has been working for me so far:
Vaseline

I’ve heard this one for years but always thought it was weird, but it’s been very helpful indeed. Smear a decent amount all around your nostrils and a little inside and it should stop that pesky pollen going any further. Couple of follow up tips – make sure you reapply it I’d you touch/wipe your nose, and make sure it’s the clear variety you’re applying (as I found out the hard way – I usually use the rose tint and it looked like I’d been bleeding or messily eating)
Herbal tea

Some herbs have a natural antihistamine that will ward off symptoms – green tea, ginger and chamomile are usually touted for these. I drink green tea every single morning and a categorically declare this useless (I’ve tried a few different brands and varieties) however chamomile is definitely one I’d say is worth trying. I’ve been having one as soon as I arrive at work in the morning and occasionally another in the afternoon if I feel I need it, which has made me feel quite chill as well as experiencing less symptoms. My current blend of choice is Honey Bee Beautiful which also includes honey in the blend, another effective remedy (more on that below) I’m wondering if that has helped a little more than a plain chamomile?
Honey

Locally produced honey is meant to be the key to all your Hayfever woes. This year I had a dilemma – I live in an East Yorkshire city but work in the North York Moors (passing the through Yorkshire Wolds with all its fields and pollen) so which place should I be buying honey local to? I decided it was easier to get both! Obviously a bit more expensive but a small price to pay overall – I either do this as a teaspoonful in the morning/evening, wack some in hot water with lemon or spread it on toast (one honey per slice). You’re supposed to start doing the honey thing in winter but having it now is having some effect as well as helping build up my tolerance ready for next year.
Eye gel

For the first time this year my eyes have been quite itchy, so I took some advice from my friend Mel and ordered this Elderflower cooling eye gel. It’s had rave reviews from other sufferers; because my eyes don’t bother me as frequently I haven’t been able to give this a thorough test but it certainly makes them feel calmer after applying.
I hope this worldly wisdom is able to help anyone that’s been in position, it truly sucks to feel poorly and you can’t enjoy life when the weather’s nice! Likewise, if anyone reading this is a major sufferer and has tried other things that have worked, I’m all for having more remedies in the bank just in case.

FASHION / The Met Gala 2018 looks that had me shook
I may be deep into house move mode (quick update: we’re in but are largely surrounded by mountains of unpacked boxes containing items we haven’t seen in almost a year and probably forgot we had) but I couldn’t let the #MetGala2018 go by without having a good ol’ nosey at what everyone was wearing could I!
This year’s theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, which is a pretty risqué theme when you have a bunch of famous people in one place known for being edgy and pretty close to the wire with their fashion choices at the best of times. I’ve seen a lot of chatter that it was a bad theme choice and that attendees who stuck to it were a bit disrespectful for doing so, honestly I don’t think so. It’s a modern society, religion exists within it and everybody has a different interpretation of what they find acceptable, so I don’t think any theme would be without taboo. Besides, taboo is what the Met Gala lives for! Here are my fave looks (NGL: it was hard).
KKW

Despite the religious theme appearing a little tenuous at first glance, you can’t deny that Kim looks SMOKING. she’s a mother of 3 goddammit!!! This gown was created by Versace and takes inspiration from the 90s chain mail trend infused with the brand’s iconic crucifix references from its Italian heritage, which then makes you realise her overall link to the theme is a little stronger. Classic silhouette, perfect fit, glorious colour against her skin tone, amazing smoky eye (nobody ever does a traditional smoky eye anymore, after this I’m totally bringing it back next time I got “out out”) and simple sleek hair to show off the dress and jewels. My only teeny negative is that you can see the slip/shorter layer underneath the dress which takes a little away from the luxe finish, I would’ve looked better to have full length or nothing.
J-Lo

Yasss Jenny from the block, WERK! This dress is all kinds of fierce and structure at the top and feminine fox at the bottom; this combo totally shouldn’t work but it so does. I’m not sure who designed it but the top is giving all the Balmain vibes with the beading and sharp shoulder detail. The pop of blue is stunning. That makeup is super neutral and the exact opposite of Kim’s but it’s just as stunning, I need to know what lip colour she’s wearing and what tan she uses!
Cardi B

This level of commitment to fashion when you’re semi-heavily pregnant is quite something – I just have me to worry about and most days the world is lucky if I manage to brush my hair and don’t smudge my eyeliner!
I’m not quite sure how intensely this has interpreted the theme but the intricate beading is reminiscent of the ornate detailing found in church decor, and the overall look with the train and headpiece could be almost bridal. She was right; her big Bronx boogie got all the girls shook.
Cara Delevigne

I think a lot of people would argue that the link of this look to the theme is beyond tenuous and more shock value, but those people forget there’s two sides to religion – saints and sinners. Cara has made it very clear which side she’s coming down on! She’s like a sexy Angel of Death, and I deffo would’ve used that headdress as an excuse not to put slap on if that was me! That said, this does kind of remind me a little of what Kendal Jenner wore to last year’s event – black, mesh and all kinds of fleshy goodies peeking out, but if yo’ goodies look good and you’re in your 20s then why the hell not I say!
Blake Lively

It’s very rare I see Blake and think she doesn’t look good, and I may have let out a little squeal when I saw this gown…wowzer. The cut and fit of this makes her body look amazing, and that train is everything (kind of reminds me of that one Rihanna had on the weird yellow gown a couple years back. But you know, nice.) I was so busy going googly eyed that I didn’t even notice that she can’t have been wearing underwear! I would say this is fashion the represents Catholic religion specifically, but I would say that it has undertones of Asian-inspired bridal dress with the deep red and luxe gold embroidery which is still a nod to the theme in part.
Priya Chopra

This is another look that has religious associations but more Asian-inspired than Catholic, and I really applaud Priya for this look as it’s perfectly demure and classy (embroidered hood/shoulder piece and deep red velvet) but still pretty sexy with that Jessica Rabbit cut skimming her curves to perfection.
Chadwick Boseman

I like it when I can include men in these sorts of posts! I feel as if this is the sort of outfit an Evangelical preacher would wear when delivering some kind of mass sermon, the kind that’s as much about performance as it is delivering the Lord’s message. For that alone, he’s nailed it.
Kate Bosworth

It probably doesn’t get more Catholic than a virginal bride does it! The gown itself has that beautiful frothy princess feel which I adore (but could never pull off) and that veil is screaming Holy Communion at me. It would’ve been nicer if she’d matched the colour of the veil and gown a little better, or at least used some of the gold accents to tie it together better, but I’m not mad at it.
Rihanna

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more on the money than Kate Bosworth as a Virgin Bride, we get Rih Rih comes AS THE FRICKIN POPE (I’m not sure if it’s blasphemous to use that word in front of Pope, but there it is). Of course she does. Not only that, but apparently he was in full support of this look?! To be honest, I’m surprised that Madonna didn’t turn up wearing something similar.
Well, that’s fashion’s finest parade done for another year, and I for one think it was one of the best yet!

LIFESTYLE/ BRB, just dropping some £££ on a new house

If you read last week’s follow up post to my ‘5 Things for 2018’ (you can have a nosey here if you missed it) you’ll have seen that, at long last, I’m moving into a new house soon.
Well, soon has turned into now. Like, THIS WEEK.
For the past couple of weeks I’ve been furiously running around going to solicitors appointments, follow up inspections, packing (and throwing out) my stuff and working out the logistics of who’s doing what and when. If you’ve ever moved house as an adult, you’ll know what I’m saying!

Because of all of this I’ve been a bit neglectful of blogging and digital life in general, so I wanted to drop in this little post to say thank you for bearing with me during this busy time, and that there are plenty of fab posts in my archives for you to have a read of if you have a few minutes to chill.

I plan to be back properly very soon – more fashion and most likely some home-related spam once I’m happy with how things look. I’ll look forward to you joining me then.

J xx

FOOD/ My top #HullFoodie hangouts (Season 2, 2018)
I can’t believe we’re ANOTHER month down on 2018 already! As well as working hard on my 5 Things for 2018 I’ve been busy curating part 2 of my #HullFoodie hangouts (you can remind yourself of part 1 here) some of them are old faves revisited, some are places I’ve only just gotten round to trying. Prepare to be hungry…

(Photos by Emma)
If you want a brunch that’s yummy and suitably basic bitch enough for the ‘gram, TH is the place. It’s just across the way from where I’ve been living for the past few months but I’d never managed to make it in before a girl’s trip one sunny Saturday morning. Since I’ve tried a few different things on the menu – my top pick is these delicious pancakes.

I’ve previously done two reviews about this place (the most recent one is here) and tried a variety of their menu – pizza, pasta, salad, sides, its all delicious. They’re often running special offers too so you can either save money or (as I do) order more food for the same price.
This place is a long standing favourite – it’s usually where we spend our anniversary or treat ourselves to a ‘proper’ Sunday lunch. The food here is a la carte and priced accordingly, though it’s still fairly reasonably and very tasty indeed. The decor is lovely and the drinks selection is good too, the only slight quibble I have is that the service can occasionally be a bit haphazard.

More pizza, you say? Oh yes, and this one is quite special… They’re a whole metre long! In a great location on Newland avenue you can bag a delicious doughy treat (they do half metre sizes too, which are still pretty epic) yummy cocktails and a round of beer pong if you fancy it. These beauties even bested me, which NEVER happens when pizza is involved, but they make a great lunch with a bit of salad the following day.
Tapasya

If you want fine dining with a twist, Tapasya is where you need to be. I visited in March and sampled a variety of their Asian cuisine (You can read about my recent visit here) which was amazing quality. If you think you’re a connoisseur of Indian food, you need to give this place a visit for the whole experience. I can’t wait to go back with the Mr.

LIFESTYLE – 5 things for 2018: how’s it going?

As my original ‘5 Things for 2018’ post has been one of the most popular of the year so far, I thought I’d do a little update on how things were going. Hope you like!
Find a new home 🏡
I’m beyond ecstatic to share that I can *almost* tick this one off the list!! After 8 looooong months of searching and living out of boxes, the Mr and I have finally found a house we love and want to build a future in. I’m sure I’ll be sharing more on my social media; and perhaps in future blog posts if anyone would like to see it?
Smash my new job 💻
This one was always going to be more of a slow burn, but it’s definitely a ‘so far, so good’ scenario – my colleagues are nice, the role is challenging and the brand is really interesting. Most important though, I feel valued and respected in my team, which is priceless.
Get back to my happy weight ⚖️
Again a slow burn, but it’s burning! I’m dropping lbs by getting back into regular physical activity, meal planning and a little PMA. I’ve set myself some goals that, although I had a bit of a wobble in February/March, I’m still on track to achieve by the end of the year.
Have eyebrows on fleek 💉
I’m also super excited to share that this goal should be we on the way to being completed too by the time you’re reading this, yay! I faced my fear of needles and have undergone a course of microblading treatments which I’m really pleased with. Once they’re fully complete and healed, I’ll be sharing a full post with photos going through the whole process for anyone who’s interested.
See more of the UK 🇬🇧
I’ve a start on this one with my quick visit to Manchester in February. I will planning more for the latter part of the year when I can enjoy cheaper travel costs and have settled into our new home a bit more, so stay tuned.
Overall I’m really pleased with my progress so far and I’m confident that I’ll be able to carrying on making progress towards the end of the year. I hope you’re doing as well when any of the goals you’ve set yourselves – remember; it can be done, just not all at once. Have faith, set mini targets and keep moving forward until you make it!
What else has been happening?
I got a new car 🚗
Sadly this decision was forced due to a minor traffic collision that wrote my car off, but I’m made up with my new ride! I’m now the proud owner of a Suzuki Swift and I’m constantly surprised at the extra things it can do (volume controls on the steering wheel, USB port, heated wing mirrors) that other people would take for granted.
I’m getting back in the fashion blogging game 👠
If you’ve been keeping up with my posts and Instagram over the past few weeks, you’ll have noticed this already. I’ve had a great time collaborating with some of my local blogging gals – spending time together, swapping tips and generally giving each other the confidence boost we all deserve. So happy to be surrounded by wonderful women!
I’ve left the clutches of the iPhone 📱
I’ve decided to switch to team Android and got a Huawei P10 back in March. It actually works in a pretty similar way to iPhone so I’m fairly comfortable with it, though it’s been more tricky to find a proper screen protector for it. However it came with a phone case included which was a really nice touch. The camera is awesome too!
Overall I definitely have a lot to feel good about in 2018, as I hoped I would, but we will see how the rest of the year pans out and I’ll share another update in a few months time.
Thanks for reading,
J xx
