  • BLOGMAS/ Day 1: lets do this?

So, after having my blog for three years I decided to give this BLOGMAS malarkey a go.

Last year I did a few festive posts – Top festive tipples4 ways to feel festive AF and Last minute stocking fillers, so I’m ready to Up the ante. I have lots of ideas (festive and non-festive) for posts through the month covering fashion, food, fun, beauty and lifestyle, so I hope you’ll join me to see how I do with creating a daily post!

So, why get involved this year? Simply put, I wanted to push myself. I’ve allowed blog posting, which is my hobby and passion project, to slide greatly this year. This has made me unhappy but I’ve felt unable to do much about it. A variety of things have contributed to this; most notably self-induced stress of looking for a new job, new home and living out of a suitcase in the meantime.

I know from experience that all it takes is a little push from somewhere to be your mojo back and put yourself back into a positive cycle – the more you enjoy something the more you want to do it, find a way to keep doing and become inspired by what else you may be able to accomplish.

So here we go – day 1, it’s all to play for. Bring it on I say!

    Thanks for reading, xx

  • FASHION/ Jenny Chat 2.0

My friend Pippa recently put a call out on Facebook – she’s expanding her photography/design business and was looking for people to help build up her portfolio. I got it touch and said “you can shoot some stuff for my blog, if you like” and she said “yeah, that sounds great.”

    Oh crap.

I’ve been wanting to try and get back into outfit shooting for a while now, but the thought of getting in front of a lens for a full on outfit whilst I’m not feeling my best made me feel a bit twitchy. “Don’t worry” Pippa said “we’ll have a lovely morning and get you feeling good again.”

As our shoot came to a close I realised two things:

1: She was right. It felt good to get back to doing something that was a huge part of my life for a long time, something that me feel more like myself again. Plus, I think the pictures came out pretty well!

2- I also realised, this is just the start. I can start to feel like the old sassy, happy me, but I’ve also got an amazing opportunity to make Jenny Chat 2.0 even better.

I currently need to find a new job AND home, which ate stressful adult tasks, but I decided to re-double my efforts, throw all of my proverbial pasta at the wall of life and see what opportunities stuck. I’ve worked hard to make my CV the best it can be, looking for opportunities in companies or industries I admire, and being as open minded as I can about what I need out of a home.

As I write I haven’t quite discovered what my next career or house move will be but I know deep down that I will soon, and knowing that gives me the positivity and strength to keep going until I do.

Thanks so much for having a read of this post, I hope you enjoyed it.

Stay stylish (that means so much more when it’s an outfit post!),

  • TRAVEL DIARIES/ Benidorm uncovered – why it can be a great place to visit.

That’s right, you read the title of this post correctly – however you won’t be reading about drunken antics, lairy behaviour or any other cliches you may have seen/heard!

I’ve only ever seen one blog post about Benidorm which, coincidentally, was as I was getting ready to write this one. I suspect this is because it doesn’t exactly have a reputation as a an instagrammable or classy destination but thought I’d give it a go.

On my recent visit I discovered that there’s definitely another side to Beni that we don’t really hear about, so here are some of what I think are its best bits…

    It has bloomin’ lovely beaches

The main beach that everybody goes nuts for is Levante, and it’s easy to see why. The sand is beautiful and soft, there’s lots of room to layout or play beach games, everything is very well maintained and lifeguards are on duty throughout the day. Head towards the ‘New Town’ end and you’ll also find water sports and even a beach library. At 4,50€ per item, sun loungers and parasols are decent value if you’re making a day of it, however there’s lots of room if you want to set up directly on the sand.

A short walk from Levante is the much smaller, but just as lovely, cove of Cala Mal Pas. It’s a great spot if you’re looking for a less busy beach that you don’t have to travel out of resort to enjoy. This is very close to poniente beach, which we didn’t visit, but has similar qualities to Levante (minus the water sports and library, and places to eat/drink aren’t perhaps quite as close to hand).

There’s yummy food (and fine dining!) to be had

Myself and the Mr (him more so than me) are avid Tripadvisor checkers of restaurants and we found that most of the good ones seemed to be located on one particular street in the Old Town, Calle de la Palma.

Due to the time of year we visited (summer/winter season crossover) quite a few were sadly closed or on reduced opening hours, but we were lucky enough to bag ourselves a table at Amigos. I had the best steak of my life! The atmosphere was warm, chilled out and classy, which suited our taste perfectly. It gets pretty busy so I would definitely encourage booking a table so you don’t miss out on foodie heaven – its a not cheap, but I promise you it’s delicious!

There’s also one of my desserts very readily available around town, churros!

For around 3€ you can get 6 (some places serve them twice the size for the same price further into Old Town, this photo was from a beach front cafe) with a side of chocolate dipping sauce. Yum.

Scattered between the usual resort cafes and bars are super trendy joints like Ole tu Cono serving up cool street food and cocktails. You’d think for their aesthetic these places would be more pricey but they’re just as great value – for about 7€ you can a pretty appetising looking burger, fries and beer or soft drink.

    Beautiful views

I thought sights like this only existed in places like the Greek Isles, but this beauty is perched on a cliff between the beaches.

Placa del Castell has it all – whitewashed stone, grand architecture, fine detailing and views of the Med like I’ve never seen.

This is the perfect spot to gather your thoughts and indulge in a spot of Mindfulness if that’s something you partake in; the sounds of the sea, cool breeze and the sun create the ideal environment.

    Pretty decent shopping

Forget souvenirs and tacky tees (well don’ t forget, everyone enjoys a Radom fridge magnet, right?) there’s potential to do some decent splurging. Take a little stroll around Old Town and you’ll find reclaimed vintage, designer clothing and sports/athleisure wear. Not forgetting everybody’s fave Spanish high street stores, Zara and Mango.

Make sure you stop by Ale-Hop too (it’s pretty easy, they’re EVERYWHERE) which is a cute lifestyle and accessories store that’s a little like Skinnydip London.

Not to mention some worthy Instagram setups!

Instagram-able locations don’t help if you’re crap at posing as I am! However if you’re sassier than me there are some great places to take pics – including a pink wall for a (if I’m honest, a significantly lower budget) Paul Smith LA vibes (further disclaimer – it’s much smaller and down a side street in between air vents, so if you seek it out don’t expect great marvels!)

Bars? Fun and classy (NOT trashy)

One of the highlights of our trip was sipping cocktails and watching the sunset from #Planta20 at Hotel Madeira Centro. I think we can pretty much find a rooftop bar anywhere these days! It’s not a venue that simply trades on the views (which as you’ll see below, are spectacular) the decor is simple yet chic, the music modern yet chilled, and the drinks prices were comparable with any other in resort.

Stepping away from the infamous ‘Square’ doesn’t mean fun goes out the window completely – head to the Levante beachfront to enjoy bars like Tiki Town that are lively, play a mixture of current and throwback tunes whilst serving great drinks.

    Other useful info and tips

    – It’s pretty cheap. Food and drink is reasonably priced and portion sizes are good.

    – They don’t do traditional Spanish food particularly well. This may be controversial to say, but we tried tapas and paella at a few places and were incredibly underwhelmed. You’ll be pretty ok with churros though!

    – Drink cava over prosecco! Most bars serve it by the glass or in small individual bottles too; the one pictured above was 5€ and filled two glasses.

    – If you visit at the end of October, these guys go all in on Halloween: businesses, staff and locals will all be done up, trick or treating kids run through the streets unti land lots of hotels throw parties.

    – Lots of businesses tend to close on Tuesday and/or half days on Wednesday.

Hope you’ve enjoyed reading and have been swayed a little into considering this a future sunshine break!

    Stay stylish,

    J xx

  • TRAVEL DIARIES/ An English gal in New York…what to do

The final piece of my four part #NewYork series! I’ve covered where to staywhere to eat and what I wore, so now I’m talking things to do.

The real question is – what ISNT there to do in the Big Apple? Whatever you like to do on vacay, you will pretty much be able to do it here! That city that never sleeps is also the city that’s always changing and getting even more awesome.

A lot of people tend to visit in autumn/winter time, however I’ve only ever been in the summer time. Although it’s  pretty warm, it’s far less busy so it’s really easy to get around without it being too crazy, which I much prefer. Summer in the city has a really relaxed vibe, exactly what you want when you’re taking time out.

Myself and the Mr sometimes differ about what we like to do when we’re away – I’m all about the relaxation, whereas he likes to keep moving and keep busy. I feel like we got a pretty good balance this time, so here are some of the things we did. Wonder if you’ll guess which ones were firmly on my personal agenda…

NOTE: some of these things we did during our first visit in summer 2013, this was the year before I started blogging so I thought I’d include them now (though some of the pics aren’t quite as good, sorry!)

Natural History museum I’m not into that many museums (uh-oh, my lack of culture is showing) but this is one that has a lot of variety and appeal to a lot of interests. Also, it’s a bloomin’ gorgeous building! As well as the mass of zones and exhibits there are also extra things to enjoy so make sure you allow lots of time to visit (we spent about 4 hours inside and still didn’t see everything).

Highlights for me included the planetarium and the Titanosaurus, which makes T-Rex look like a toddler. Not forgetting this famous film star… Dum Dum!

    Central Park
As we were staying just a block away from the park, we went for a walk there pretty much every day. It’s a beautiful place to go early in the morning and stroll whilst it’s really peaceful – most other people are joggers and dog walkers who are on the tracks round the edge so it’s a really relaxing start to the day.
If you’re a film fan, taking part on one of the park’s movie set tours is a really nice way to spend a couple of hours (as well as burn a few calories walking about a quarter of the park area).

Statue of Liberty This was one of my favourite places to visit, despite the face that I only really went because I thought I should. As well as the lady herself, there’s a lovely boat ride out to Liberty island to take in the Manhattan skyline. There’s a fully guided audio tour right round the island (included in the price and in a number of different languages) which is a really great way to learn as much as you want at your own pace.

    Circle Line City Cruise
Great to do in lovely weather, but don’t get sun burnt like I did! We took the ‘Landmarks’ cruise which also touched on Brooklyn a little, it was really nice way to see the city skyline and learn

    Empire State Building
(Side note: I’m pretty chuffed with how this pic came out, since I’m not the best photographer!)

If you’re in a city full of sky scrapers, you absolutely have go up somewhere high to have a proper look at the entire skyline! As you can see (this is just one of the many views, I have too many to post) it’s pretty spectacular. From experience I’d recommend avoiding visiting here for sunset – you’ll be able to see the sun go down fine but you’ll be hard pushed to get a viewing spot near the edge to actually look down on anything as it’s extremely crowded. On this visit we arrived at about 10-10.30am and found it pretty easy to walk around, get good spots to view and didn’t feel rushed into moving to make way for others.

Rockefeller Center  and Top of the Rock
This is such a lovely area to visit as it feels very ‘New York’ particularly at night when you get the Home Alone vibes (even without the massive Christmas tree)
I’ve visited Top of the Rock super early in the morning and at night, and I’d say personally I preferred the latter as it’s lovely to see the city all lit up (if you go too early in the morning it could bit a little foggy with all the city smog, as it was when I did it). As with Empire State at this time it’s pretty easy to get around, get a good spite near the windows and stay here as long as you want.

I also enjoyed the NBC studio tour around the Building. Even if you don’t know too many of the programmes or tv stars mentioned in the tour, it’s interesting to see popular TV sets behind the scenes, including SNL

    The High Line
I really like the idea of this project – in case you’re not familiar, it’s an old train tack that has been converted into a wild garden that stretches several blocks.

However, it wasn’t quite as cool and chilled as I’d been led to believe by other people’s blog posts. We visited on a Saturday morning, which was probably one of the busiest times, and it was a little tricky to walk peacefully and at a leisurely pace. If you’re staying close by I’d still say go and check it out, but it’s probably not worth walking 30 blocks to get there as we did.

    Times Square
This one is a bit of a no brainer, and if you’re staying in midtown Manhattan you’ll probably visit here a lot. It’s pretty spectacular at all times of day as there’s always something interesting to look at.
Just a little tip – there are plenty of street performers, some of them not wearing many/any clothes, so if you linger or ask for a photo be prepared to tip.

    Visit Carrie Bradshaw’s stoop
If you’re a Sex and the City fan you HAVE to make the time to head here, and it’ll feel like a really surreal moment when you do.

Ms Bradshaw’s stoop is 66 Perry Street, Greenwich village, just off Bleacker street. Be clear about the address if you take a cab, as they don’t automatically know where it is (I know right).
The street itself is kind of narrow compared to other NYC streets but it feels so comfortable and homey, like you’ve been there before. There’ll probably be other people there taking photos too, so be prepared to wait. Another thing worth mentioning is that you can’t actually get up onto the stoop for sitting etc as there are chains across the front. It does ruin your pictures a bit, but I can kinda see why they feel the need to do it.

I’d also encourage you to take a stroll around the village itself as it has such a lovely chilled out vibes about it. There’s great pizza and lovely little stores to spend a few hours.

    Take in some comedy
There are a lot of comedy clubs in NYC, as a couple we’re pretty big fans of a good comedian she were keen to check this out.

During our latest visit we went to he number one rated venue in Manhattan, Comedy Cellar, specifically the new Village Underground site. They’re pretty well known for having famous comedians drop by unannounced to try out new material, and whilst we were there Louis C.K dropped by to do just that.

We’ve also visited Stand up NY run by Comedy Central before, which was a pretty fun night too.

Couple of points to note when visiting comedy clubs in NYC – there’s normally a minimum number of drinks you’re required to purchase for minimum spend, so make sure you’re aware of what that is before you go. Secondly, if you’re not from the city and sitting near the front then you will definitely be ‘heckle fodder’ so be prepared!

Drinks at a rooftop barParticulalry when the weather is nice, this is another really lovely way to take in some of the skyline. We were lucky that our hotel had a fabulous rooftop bar, and I know of other hotels that have them as well as rooftop pools so it’s pretty easy to find them wherever you are around the city.

As with many big cities drinks aren’t cheap, so researching into which bars do happy hours and when is a really great way to enjoy this in a more cost effective way.
There are also some nice bars and restaurants overlooking Times Square so it’s worth checking out those as well.

My top tip for visiting bars is looking ahead to find out if you can book a table (the more popular bars will require this to get a decent table).

If you’re planning to do a lot of the things mentioned in this post I would strongly recommend buying a multi- event ticket, such at the New York pass or New York City Pass. They both cover a variety of the more popular tourist attractions, tours and events so are great value for money if you’re packing a lot into your visit, but do add up the cost of doing everything separately first to make sure you’re making a saving (it also means you can perhaps do a couple of extra activities that you wouldn’t have done for free)

If you’re still with me then thanks for reading! I know this was a long post but I hope it helps anybody heading to NYC on the future.

FASHION & TRAVEL DIARIES/ An English gal in New York… what I wore in NYC

Just a few candid pics and a little roundup of what I wore in The Big Apple during my August vacay. Hope you like!

Travel vibesThis harem jumpsuit was so comfy and easy to travel in, whilst the kimono stopped me being too chilly. You can’t see in this pic, but I finished off he look with black sliders to make gliding through airport security super easy.

Kimono, Boohoo (similar here, which I also own) / Jumpsuit Boohoo

Sightseeing in the parkI’m so short these culottes just look like half-mast trousers on me! They were very airy for the warm weather too. I’m *almost* tempted to say that converse are the best kind of shoe for pounding the streets on a city break too, the sole feels a bit harder wearing than other tainers, and they keep trainer socks in place so much better.

Stripe Bardot top, Topshop (other patterns here)/  Culottes Boohoo / Shoes Converse

A night of Cuban food and city views I’m trying to cover it up a little where I can because I’m not loving myself right now, this outfit allowed me to feel stylish and not get loads of skin out.

Top Topshop (also available in white) / Jeans ASOS / Shoes EGO

Boat trippingFor the love of your skin, DO NOT FORGOT SUNSCREEN WHEN YOUR SHOULDERS ARE UNCOVERED! Other than that, it’s a really cute and comfy dress.

Dress Topshop / Shoes Converse / Bag, Topshop (similar here) / Belt River Island

Visiting Carrie Bradshaw Tryna walk cute down the street whilst a bunch of other tourists try to snap pics of the famous SATC brownstone stoop. Somehow I don’t think CB would be a mom Jean kind of a gal (but I bet SJP loves ’em)

Top ASOS / Jeans ASOS / Shoes Dorothy Perkins

Shop, shop, shop some moreGet that hair tied off yo’ face, there’s rails to trawl through gurl!

Top Topshop / Bag, Topshop (similar here) / Jeans Topshop

Last little stroll before home time After all the food I ate, I think these elasticated culottes were all that would fit!

Top, Topshop (similar here)/ Culottes, Topshop (last year)

Roof top nightsOur last night in NYC was done up right – bubbles at our hotel’s roof top bar, followed by a slap up Italian in Hell’s Kitchen and one last stroll through Times Square at night.
